The 2018 1oz Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin is a key release in The Perth Mint’s long-running Kookaburra series. Beginning in 1990, and now the longest running bullion program by the Perth Mint, the Kookaburra coin program sees a new artistic design every year. The Kookaburra is Australia's most well-known native bird species, so its no surprise this coin is a top-seller every year. In 2018, the series upgraded from .999 to .9999 fine silver, making this the first Kookaburra with 99.99% purity. The coin boasts an evolving design, this year’s reverse shows a kookaburra in flight under a detailed full moon, emphasising artistic variation and collector appeal. 

The Kookaburra is Australia's most famous bird. A member of the kingfisher family, it generally doesn’t like to fish! Instead, it preys on invertebrates and some small vertebrates. The word Kookaburra comes from the Wiradjuri word “guuguubarra”. The word resembles the famous laughing call of the Kookaburra. Kookaburras laughter is iconic as an Australian morning wake up call. The joyous laughter alerts to a majestic sunrise and beautiful day ahead.

Design & Craftsmanship

The reverse design for 2018 portrays a kookaburra in full flight, wings spread, framed by the full moon above and stylised surroundings. The inscriptions include “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA,” year “2018,” purity/weight details, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark. 

On the obverse, the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears, with the coin’s denomination and other standard inscriptions. 

The coin is produced in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) finish with sharply rendered details and depth appropriate for a bullion issue. The 2018 edition marks a technical upgrade in purity while retaining high minting quality.

The 2018 Kookaburra bullion coin is delivered in a protective clear capsule to guard its surface. Rolls of 20 and trays of 100 are used for bulk orders.
